Wayne Dwyer said “When you change the way we look at things, the things we look at change”.
This serves as a gently reminder that we are responsible for the meaning we give every situation. We rob ourselves of our happiness by looking at things in ways that do not serve us. A situation or problem just is; it doesn’t mean anything until we add a label and give it a meaning.
People will not act like we want them to, things will not work out as we planned, and we may not act like we intended or in a way that makes us proud. When faced with these unpleasant situations, we can change the way we look at things and in so doing change the the meaning it holds for us. It is not about finding excuses for our ill-doings or tolerating bad behaviour from others, it is more about seeing the situation for what it really is without letting assumptions, judgements or our egos interpret what is going on for us.
Allowing yourself to choose the way you see things instead of reacting automatically according to old patterns will allow you to experience less hurt and resentments and instead feel more joy. Therefore when a loved one snaps at us we can choose to see it as the person being under stress instead of seeing the incident as proof that they don’t love us.
Change the way you look at things and begin to see every situation with new eyes.
